General questions about PhotoMesa:
- What is PhotoMesa?
PhotoMesa is a program that supports image browsing, annotation
and search. It is designed to be extremely easy to use
and to support the way most home digital camera owners actually
manage their images - they drop groups of images into named
directories, and don't do anything else. Just open a directory, and PhotoMesa finds all of the
photos in it and its subdirectories, and you start browsing.
That's it! Then, when you feel like annotating photos with
names, categories, or captions, PhotoMesa lets you do that
easily. Then later, you can search for photos based on
those annotations, and reorganize them as well.
- How is it different than other products?
PhotoMesa is unique in several key aspects:
- It uses a Zoomable User Interface (ZUI) to navigate. This means that you
don't have to spend all that time using the scrollbar to move around. Instead,
you just click to zoom in, and right-click to zoom out. You can concentrate on
using the photos, not on the interface.
- It shows several folders of images at once. Most photo browsing programs
show a list of folders, and when you click on a folder, you see the contents of
that folder. But what if you don't know exactly what folder you want to look in?
By showing several folders at once, you don't have to know in advance where
your photos are.
- It supports serendipitous photo finding. You might start looking for a
particular photo, but by showing several folders of photos at once, you will quickly
find yourself browsing through photos you didn't even know existed!
- It works well when looking at photos with someone else. Most photo browsing programs
are very difficult to follow if you aren't the one controlling the mouse. But by using
smooth animated zooming, your partner can follow what is changing on the screen even when
you are doing the clicking.
- It is easy to add annotations to photos.
- You can search those annotations, and then change your
view - to group by those annotations. For example, see
all the photos with your dog, and then re-group to see who
else was in those pictures.
